Sobyanin: Construction of a new building of the Great Moscow Circus has begun

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has launched the construction of a new building of the Great Moscow Circus in the Mnevnikovskaya floodplain. This is stated by the publication in the official channel of the capital mayor on the domestic platform MAX.

“After careful consultations and studies, together with the circus community, with the citizens, we consulted and prepared such a serious project to create a new house of the Bolshoi Moscow Circus, which is unique in its architecture and technology, gives opportunities to continue the best traditions of our Russian circus and create completely unique, interesting world-class projects,” the head of the Russian capital wrote in his channel.

As the mayor noted, a project was prepared, a construction site was prepared, and today active construction was launched. Sobyanin expressed gratitude to all those who participated in the preparation of the relevant project, stressing that it was a really difficult and important work.

The publication of the capital's mayor indicates that the total area of the unique circus complex will be 82.2 thousand square meters, and the maximum capacity is five thousand spectators. The mayor drew attention to the fact that the circus in the Mnevnikov floodplain will become a popular place among citizens and guests of the capital not only during performance hours, because next to it there will be a landscaped park and a two-level parking for 500 cars.

According to Sobyanin, getting to the new building of the Bolshoi Moscow Circus will be very convenient, given that there are two stations of the Big Ring Line of the Metro (BKL), opened in 2021, Mnevnik and Terekhovo.

The original appearance of the new circus building in the Mnevnikovskaya floodplain will make it part of the performances, the head of the Russian capital continued. He pointed out that unusual architectural solutions will create a festive atmosphere for the audience on the approach to the site. According to the mayor, the circus dome, made in bright colors, will become the dominant and decoration of the Mnevnikov floodplain, colored decorative elements will symbolize the movement and plasticity of this art, and the rhythmic repetition of smooth lines and a rich color palette of materials will form a bright and memorable artistic image of the building.

The height of the dome from the base of the spire will reach almost 100 meters. It will install media screens in the form of a crystal, which will attract the attention of citizens and guests of the capital. Below will be placed information media line, said the mayor.

The artistic director of the Great Moscow Circus on Vernadsky Avenue Askold Zapashny noted that the design of the building provides for a number of innovative solutions, and its key feature will be a modular system that will not only preserve the technical level of the site, but also introduce modern developments.

Also a feature of the complex will be an arena equipped with an automated control system, and its configuration can be changed directly during the circus performance. In total, the project provides for 11 transformation options, ranging from arenas for horse shows and ice performances to spaces for water and multimedia productions. The change of the arena will take no more than four minutes, which will ensure an almost continuous course of the presentation even with a radical renovation of the stage space.

“The building will create conditions for productions that cannot be implemented on the traditional arena,” the mayor added.
