Scientists from India have identified an experimental compound SPK17, which can cause cell death of glioblastoma - one of the most aggressive forms of brain tumors. The study was published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC).
The action of the substance is based on the suppression of the TTK protein involved in the control of cell division. Normally, this mechanism allows cells to temporarily stop and repair DNA damage. However, when the protein is blocked, tumor cells continue to multiply with genetic disorders, which ultimately leads to their destruction.
In laboratory tests, SPK17 demonstrated activity against cancer cells immune to the chemotherapy drug temozolomide. Even at a lower concentration, the compound caused an approximately eightfold increase in the cell death signal compared to the drug. The related substance SPK17b also showed the ability to limit the spread of tumor cells into surrounding tissue.
The authors of the study believe that the discovered compounds may be the basis for the development of new methods to combat resistant brain tumors. At the same time, scientists emphasize that the experiments so far were carried out exclusively on cell cultures. Before talking about the use of substances in medicine, it is necessary to evaluate their safety and effectiveness in further research.
