Sunday morning started lazy not only for St. Petersburg. A photo trap of the Lower Svir Reserve captured the sweet awakening of forest boars.
Judging by the published video, the company of three diverse pigs - black, brown and spotted - fully enjoyed the weekend. Quite grunting, the animals began the morning with mandatory "spa treatments" - the leisurely scratching of the sides and back against the rough bark of the pine tree.
For wild pigs, scratching is not just a way to wake up, but part of everyday hygiene. Friction on the bark helps boars get rid of parasites and old wool, as well as leave odor tags.
Spotted color of one of the "pigs" occurs in the wild infrequently. In the Nizhne-Svirsky Reserve, it was told that a few years ago such a color appeared in a boar as a result of an accidental mutation, without the participation of domestic pigs. Later, this beast became a father, and spotted piglets began to appear in the local population more often.
Boars are omnivorous animals. With the help of a mobile patch, they dig the ground in search of acorns, roots, tubers, insects and other food. Such a “perekop” not only feeds animals, but also aerates the soil, helping the seeds get into the ground.
Boars usually live in groups that include females with young animals. Adult males most of the year keep alone and join the herd only during the race. In the Leningrad region, it usually takes place until mid-December.
Despite the formidable appearance, boars try to avoid humans. When meeting in the forest, experts advise not to approach animals and not to try to feed them: wild pigs can be dangerous, especially if piglets are nearby.
