In the Moscow region in recent years, cases have become more frequent when brown bears come close to settlements. This is reported by TASS with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Ecology of the Moscow region.
As explained in the Ministry, this situation is most likely due to the increase in the number of this species in the regions bordering the Moscow region. That is why traces of the life of bears near the suburban settlements began to be recorded much more often.
According to the regional Ministry of Ecology, since the beginning of the year, about 20 appeals have been received from citizens who assumed that they found traces of bears in the forests near settlements. At the same time, in most cases, the presence of the beast is not indicated by the meetings themselves, but by prints on the ground, bullies on trees and other characteristic signs. Only occasionally near the roads noticed young individuals.
At the same time, the ministry noted that people are often mistaken: the prints of large dogs are taken for bear tracks, and damage left by other animals, such as moose or even woodpeckers, are taken for marks on trees.
The number of bears in the region directly depends on the density of their populations in neighboring regions. So, in the Tver, Yaroslavl and Smolensk regions, the number of the species increased. Against this background, bears are most often noted in the western and northern districts of the Moscow region. As of 2026, the brown bear population in the region can be up to 70-80 individuals. This figure includes both the aboriginal population, which can reach 30-40 animals, and about the same number of individuals coming from other regions.
Recently, the bear was seen in the Klinsky urban district near the village of Spasskoe.
