The ROC explained whether it is a sin to euthanize a seriously ill pet
The euthanization of a domestic animal, which is seriously ill and experiencing severe torment, is not considered a sin, if in this way a person seeks to alleviate his suffering. This position was expressed by the clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Pets often become full-fledged members of the family, so their loss causes owners severe mental pain. However, the attitude towards the life of man and animal in Christianity is different. Animals do not have the same fate after death as humans, so their suffering is not considered from the point of view of the need for spiritual purification.
The priests also explained that the refusal of sedation is not always a manifestation of care for the pet. If an animal is terminally ill and suffers severe suffering, prolonging its life can only aggravate the suffering. In such a situation, ending the torment may be a more humane solution.
In this case, the decision to euthanize remains a difficult test for the owner. Priests believe that it is important for a person to be guided not only by his own attachment to the pet, but also by his condition. If the continuation of life is accompanied by unbearable pain, euthanasia, in their opinion, can be an acceptable act of mercy.
