Space weather reached our planet: astrophysicists recorded the beginning of a magnetic storm

In the Volgograd region began a geostorm

According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy IKI and ISZF RAS, the Earth entered a dense stream of plasma that escaped from the coronal hole on the Sun, last night.

All this time, the planet’s magnetosphere heroically resisted, keeping the indicators in a safe “green zone”, but, as scientists warned, its safety margin is not unlimited.

Instrumental monitoring confirms the scale of the phenomenon: in just 48 hours, the speed of the solar wind in the vicinity of the Earth soared more than twice – from 300 to almost 700 kilometers per second.

Experts note that with such extreme parameters, a breakdown into a magnetic storm was absolutely inevitable. Although the baseline perturbation level is estimated to be G1, the sharp spike in flow rate has experts warning of the risk of stronger fluctuations in the geomagnetic background.

During such periods, weather-dependent people are especially vulnerable. Doctors strongly recommend not to be heroic: try to get enough sleep, be in the fresh air more often and temporarily reduce the intensity of physical exertion to help the body gently adapt to the space “swing”.
