Volgograd explained the rules of taking medicines
The Health Committee of the Volgograd region prepared explanations on common issues related to medication.

Almost everyone has to take medication at some point. At the same time, even proven and effective drugs can harm or not work properly if you violate the rules of their use. Experts have analyzed the most typical situations faced by patients.
How to compare medication with food?
You need to focus on the instructions for the drug - it always indicates when it is better to take the drug. Drugs that are important to get into the intestines as quickly as possible (for example, enzymes or some painkillers) are usually prescribed before meals. If the medicine is able to irritate the gastric mucosa, it is advised to drink during meals. A number of drugs, on the contrary, are more effectively absorbed when the body already has bile and fats - such funds are taken after a meal.
What drink is suitable for taking pills?
The best option is pure warm water in the volume of 150-250 ml. This volume helps the tablet to freely enter the stomach, and the neutral water environment does not provoke undesirable chemical reactions. Do not drink medicines with tea, coffee, milk, juices or carbonated drinks. Alcohol when taking medications is strictly excluded.
What to do if it is difficult to swallow a pill?
You do not need to chew or divide the tablet yourself if the instructions do not have direct permission for such actions. If swallowing causes difficulties, you should consult a doctor or pharmacist: a specialist can choose another form of medicine - for example, a syrup or solution.
What to do if you miss taking the drug?
The decision depends on how much time has passed and when the next dose should be. If there is very little left before the next reception, it is better to skip the missed dose - so you can avoid the risk of overdose.
What is the risk of overdose?
An excess amount of medication can cause poisoning, harm the liver and kidneys, and in some cases lead to serious complications. In no case should the dose specified by the manufacturer or prescribed by the attending physician be exceeded.
How to act in case of side effects?
If undesirable reactions occur, you should immediately stop taking the drug and consult a doctor as soon as possible to adjust treatment. Do not tolerate discomfort or try to manage symptoms with other medications without a specialist prescription.
