In the central part of the capital of Albania, Tirana, clashes occurred between law enforcement officers and anti-government protesters gathered at the residence of Prime Minister Edi Rama. According to the national news agency ATA, the incident occurred in the immediate vicinity of the government building.
Demonstrators demanding the resignation of the head of government, threw law enforcement officers homemade incendiary mixtures and elements of paving stones. In response, the police were forced to use water cannons and other special means to disperse the crowd.
Earlier, the organizers of student performances in Tirana announced a change in the format of their actions. Instead of daily rallies, they decided to hold protests twice a week, namely on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The situation in the Albanian capital sharply escalated on October 13 amid a student demonstration outside the building of the Ministry of Education. Since then, there have been regular incidents of confrontation between protesters and law enforcement in Tirana. Before the riots began, mass anti-government rallies took place in the city for more than 130 days in a row, prompted by the authorities’ support for a project to build a resort complex on the territory of the Viosa Narta protected area on the Adriatic coast of the country.
Earlier, the Special Anti-Corruption Structure of the Prosecutor’s Office of Albania initiated an investigation into the fact of changing the legal status of this protected natural area. According to reports, the investment company Affinity Partners, the beneficiary of which is the son-in-law of the American leader Jared Kushner, plans to implement a large-scale resort project on this site, covering the uninhabited island of Sazan and several hundred hectares of protected land.
