The Orthodox Church celebrates on this day the memory of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, also known under the nickname Mirotochets.
According to the story, Dimitri’s parents were secret Christians. They baptized their son in the house church and raised him in faith and piety. After the death of his father, Demetrius took his place, becoming proconsul Thessalonica. In this position he showed himself as an open Christian, began to preach and converted many of the inhabitants of the city.
News of Demetrius's activities reached the emperor. The preacher was imprisoned and later executed. The martyr’s body was buried at night by the Christians of Solun, and a slave of Demetrius named Lupp took his lord’s robe, watered with blood, and his ring. With their help, according to legend, he subsequently performed many miracles.
