Australian boxing champion Josh Frederiksen has died at the age of 36 while parachuting, the Brisbane Times reported, citing a statement from Australian Parachute Federation (APF) executive director Stephen Porter.
“APF is deeply saddened by the death of one of our members in an accident on landing. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the paratrooper community. Parachute jumping comes with certain risks and while we are constantly working to reduce them, it is impossible to eliminate them completely, Porter said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 4. According to preliminary APF data, Frederiksen’s parachute opened and worked normally, but when approaching the ground he got into turbulence, which led to a hard landing. As a result of the impact, he suffered severe injuries to his chest, pelvis and abdomen. The athlete was taken to Brisbane Hospital, where he died the same night.
Frederiksen has more than 100 jumps, according to the Brisbane Times. In professional boxing, he spent 20 fights, winning 13 victories with five defeats and two draws. He held the Australian light heavyweight title.
