More than 1,200 Astrakhan residents united the all-Russian day of running “Cross of the Nation”
The event was timed to the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia.
As reported in the Department of the press service and information of the administration of the Governor of the region, the distance went both professional athletes and amateurs. The oldest participant of the race was 84 years old, the youngest was nine years old.
The organizers were the regional Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports and the Athletics Federation of the Astrakhan region. Winners in each of the ten age categories received federal awards and prizes.
Minister of Physical Culture and Sports of the region Nina Ivashkina noted that the Cross of the Nation is not just a mass race, but part of the systematic work on the development of sports. She thanked everyone who went to the distance, stressing that the participant inspires others to be more active and healthier.
Cross of the Nation is held in 85 regions of the country. Every year, up to 1.5 million people participate in the race – from schoolchildren to pensioners. Distances range from 1 to 12 km depending on age and fitness.
