Figure skater Evgeny Semenenko told about the attitude to records and study in medical school
A week earlier, the student of Alexei Mishin became the winner of the first stage of the “Rhapsody of Ice”, noticeably ahead of rivals. He broke the bar of 100 points in the short program and the slightest did not reach 300 on the sum of two. After the competition, Evgeny answered the questions of the MK in St. Petersburg journalist, telling about the peculiarities of working with Russian and foreign directors and how it is possible to combine performances at the highest level with studies at a medical university.

- At the Ondrej Nepela Memorial in Bratislava, you scored record points for Russian skaters for two programs, but at the Denis Ten Memorial in Almaty, Vladislav Dikidzhi surpassed your score. Some experts urge not to pay attention to the assessments, others focus on these points. What do you think of such records?
- Each athlete has their own goals for the season and for the competition separately. At each tournament, I try to show the result I need to win. It will turn out to be a record - great, just winning - also great.
- Is it important for you to exceed the mark of 100 points in the short program and 300 on the sum of two?
- You should always strive for the highest results. I do not set a bar for myself in tournaments.
- Many believe that at the start of the season, the leading skaters have too many competitions, and they are overloaded
The schedule is really not easy. You need to be in shape to please the audience, coaches and yourself.
- At the stage of the Russian Grand Prix in Kazan, you declared five quadruple jumps. Why did you limit yourself to four?
- You want a lot in life, but you still need to evaluate your real readiness for competition. I am glad to have cleanly performed the content that was shown to the Kazan audience.
- In early November, you will perform at the ISU Grand Prix in China. Have you already studied which skaters will have to compete with?
- The lineup saw as soon as they laid out the lists for all stages of the Grand Prix. Of course, I felt more joy when I found my name in them.
- By this season, Nikita Mikhailov put a short program for you, and Benoit Richot put an arbitrary one. What was the difference between working with Russian and foreign directors?
- Both Nikita and Benoit have already worked, and there is a certain understanding of how the relationship between the athlete and the choreographer is built. It’s not the first time we’ve found interesting images on the ice.
- Did you reread Dumas’s novel and other vampire literature in the summer for a better portrayal?
- I always responsibly approach the creation of images and the embodiment of the ideas of choreographers. To delve into the topic, to skip the program through your heroes is an integral part of the work of an athlete. I'm interested in that myself.
- You're in your sixth year of medical school. On the one hand, as a professional doctor, you feel your body, and on the other hand, you cannot but understand what the loads in figure skating can lead to. Does education help in a sports career or hinder it?
- The combination of study and sports allows you to always be in good shape, teaches you to discipline, the ability to allocate time. You could say one complements the other. Professional sports is always a great load on the body, and it is the knowledge of medicine, anatomy and human physiology that allows you to competently organize the training process. This week, we hosted an international conference on this topic.
- Have you already decided on your medical specialty?
- When he entered, he planned to connect his professional life with diagnosis. Most likely, I will do it after graduation and completion of a sports career.
