Russian swimmer Maxim Shcherbakov is fully focused on his own preparations for the upcoming world championship in short water and ignores the results of foreign rivals. In an interview with journalists, the athlete admitted that at this stage he is absolutely not interested in competing in parallel international tournaments and does not even watch broadcasts of other championships.
The athlete made these statements immediately after his triumphant finish at the national championship in St. Petersburg, where he won a gold medal in the 200-meter distance in complex swimming. On St. Petersburg water, Shcherbakov demonstrated the result of 1 minute 53.02 seconds, which allowed him to successfully fulfill the qualification standard for a trip to the main start of the planet.
Speaking about the upcoming tournament, the swimmer noted that the key stage of preparation for him was the recent participation in the European championship in 2026 in Paris. According to him, the French competitions brought him enormous benefits, allowing him to clearly see how the world's leading masters distribute their forces and tactically unfold along the distance.
Shcherbakov stressed that every professional athlete has a natural pre-launch excitement, but he himself retains the maximum combat mood. At the same time, the swimmer preferred not to make loud statements about possible awards, adding that in sports it is not customary to make predictions in advance even for specific seconds.
The planetary short-water swimming championship will be hosted by Beijing from December 1-6, 2026. An important feature of these competitions will be that the delegation from the Russian Federation is allowed to participate in a full-fledged format - under the national flag and with the performance of the national anthem.
