British comedian and actor Sasha Baron Cohen apologized to Kazakhstanis for the role of fictional journalist Borat Sagdiyev. In the Happy Sad Confused podcast on YouTube, he stressed that the image of Borat has nothing to do with Kazakhstan: the character’s belonging to a particular country varied depending on the venue where the show was released.
The actor noted that he used a certain accent within the framework of a fictional image, while his ideas about the real speech of Central Asians are quite limited. According to Cohen, the image was built in part on the ignorance of the interlocutors – they were ready to believe any ridiculous claims about places that they knew almost nothing about.
Sacha Baron Cohen twice released feature films dedicated to the character Borat.
