In Vologda, the creation of a unique lace towel “Times Binding Thread” is being completed, which recreates the decorative traditions and ornaments of the peoples of Russia. Over the art object under the leadership of Vologda lacemaker, people’s master of Russia Maria Medkova worked 53 masters of lacemaking from 12 regions of the country. Participants wove 55 fragments, which reflect the ornaments of more than 25 peoples living in Russia.
The Mirozdanie project was launched in May this year at the initiative of the Center for Folk Culture of the Vologda region and is dedicated to the Year of National Unity. The idea of a towel as an infinite matter, accompanying a person from birth to death, was close to the masters of different cultures. Lacemakers themselves chose whose ornament will be weaved, many sought to show the traditions of their regions.
The towel reflects patterns from traditional costumes, headgear and jewelry of different peoples: from Adyghe dresses to Chukchi kitchen clothes. Some fragments represent local crafts, such as Gayutin painting and Shyomoda birch bark carving. Although most of the fragments are made in the technique of Vologda lace, there are also Eletsk, Karelian numerical and Kadnikov peasant lace.
Now there is a final assembly of three paintings that will make a triptych. The final presentation of the canvas will be held before the end of the year at the Lace Museum.
