He studied at the philological faculty of Moscow State University, but two years later he left the university. In his youth, the musician changed many professions: he worked as a geologist, loader and laboratory assistant
The creative path of the Starchik began in the late 1950s. He became a famous composer and bard, the author of music to the poems of many prominent Soviet poets. His repertoire includes works on poems by Yuri Vizbor, Bulat Okudzhava, Yuri Kim, Alexander Gorodnitsky, Novella Matveeva and David Samoilov. One of his most famous compositions is the song “I was born by a river”.
In the 1960s, Starczyk was active in the dissident movement. He attended famous readings on Mayakovsky Square in Moscow. For his human rights activities, the musician was severely persecuted by the Soviet authorities.

For decades he remained an important figure of the Russian musical emigration, preserving and developing the traditions of the author's song abroad.
