In Hungary called the possible date of transition from forint to euro
Hungary may abandon the forint in favor of the euro by 2032, said at an investment forum in Budapest the head of the State Agency for debt management Gergej Tardos, reports Bloomberg.
Hungary may abandon the forint in favor of the euro by 2032, said at an investment forum in Budapest the head of the State Agency for debt management Gergej Tardos, reports Bloomberg. He said the government's plan to reduce the budget deficit, unveiled this week, offers a "good chance" to switch to the euro over that period.
At the same time, in May, the candidate for the post of foreign Minister of Hungary Anita Orban said that the country plans to meet the Maastricht criteria for joining the eurozone and switch to the euro by 2030.
Hungarian politicians now assume that a rapid transition requires a more favorable global economic environment than is currently being observed.
75% of hungarians support introduction of euro
Finance Minister András Karman, in an interview with Reuters, also called 2032 a likely date for joining the eurozone. He said it was in line with market expectations.
Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank of Hungary Zoltan Kurali called such a scenario basic. According to him, the government will meet the criteria for joining the eurozone by 2030, and two years later, in 2032, the country will switch to the euro. He did not rule out a more rapid development of events: if the criteria are met by 2029, the euro could be introduced in 2031. In a less favorable scenario, fiscal risks and exchange rate fluctuations during the ERM II period could push back euro adoption and eurozone entry by 2033.
In April, the head of the opposition party Tisa, which won a constitutional majority in the elections in Hungary, Peter Magyar said that the country should eventually switch to the euro.
