Moldova launched a new power line with a length of 158 kilometers
Moldova has commissioned the Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line, which will allow to supply the capital with electricity without using the infrastructure of the Moldavian GRES in Transnistria

Moldova has commissioned the Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line, which will allow to supply the capital with electricity without using the infrastructure of the Moldavian GRES in Transnistria. The opening of the facility was announced by the Minister of Energy of the Republic Dorin Zhungietu.
The length of the line is about 158 kilometers. It connects a 400 kilovolt power plant in Vulcanesti with a 330 kilovolt power facility in Chisinau.
According to Dorin Zhungietu, the launch of the power line will reduce the dependence of the Moldovan energy system on the Kuchurgan hub and increase the reliability of the country's electricity supply.
The construction of the facility was financed by a loan from the World Bank.
The new infrastructure is a continuation of the energy route that previously connected Vulcanesti with the Romanian city of Isaccia. From there, a 400 kilovolt power line was built to the Moldovan city.
The changes come amid a review of sources of electricity imports. Since 2025, Moldova has stopped buying electricity from the Moldavian GRES located in Transnistria. Previously, this station accounted for about 95 percent of the electricity imported by the republic.
After the cessation of supplies from the Moldavian GRES, Romania became the main source of imports for Moldova. The new Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line should provide an additional route for the transmission of electricity to the capital.
