The ban on transit through Russia has complicated the supply of coal to Poland before the winter
Restriction of railway transit through Russia affected the route of Kazakh coal supplies to Poland before the heating season

The restriction of railway transit through Russia affected the route of Kazakh coal supplies to Poland before the heating season. According to Zero.pl, the suspension of transportation through the transport hub Krasnoe has caused concerns about a possible shortage of fuel and rising prices.
The Russian side has asked neighboring countries to temporarily stop sending all cargo and empty wagons to Belarus via Krasnoe. Coal, which Polish companies buy in Kazakhstan, was also restricted.
This is a convention ban. This procedure is used on railways with a gauge width of 1520 mm, when the receiving infrastructure cannot cope with the flow of cars.
Zero.pl explains the value of this route for the Polish market by the volume of purchases. In the first half of 2026, Poland imported about 1.9 million tons of coal from Kazakhstan.
The restriction coincided with the purchase of large quantities of fuel by Polish energy companies for the winter. Zero.pl reports the assessment of the Polish authorities, who called the incident a “dirty trick” of Russia. Possible coal shortages and higher prices are described in the publication as risks, not as already occurring consequences.
