Orthodontists called the main mistakes of patients before starting treatment with eliners

Eliners in 2026 is not just a transparent alternative to braces, but a full-fledged orthodontic system with digital planning, step change of caps and accurate biomechanics. The main mistake of patients is to start treatment without understanding the rules, said Russian orthodontist Andrei Zhuk, writes sb.by.

Eliners are not a cure for lazy people

Many patients choose eliners just because they are discreet, comfortable and modern. But this is not an easy version of treatment, but a system that requires high inclusion.

- Ordinary eliners should be worn 20-22 hours a day, and each cap should be changed according to the prescribed schedule, most often every 10-14 days, explains Andrei Zhuk. If a person is not ready to comply with this regime, the technology ceases to be as predictable as advertising looks.

According to the expert, the question is not whether you have good mouthguards. The question is, are you really willing to live by the rules of this treatment? Braces also need discipline, but the system is fixed. Eliners only work when they are on the teeth.

Eliners don't fit everyone the same

The possibilities of transparent caps have increased greatly in recent years. But success still depends on the right selection of the patient, the clinical experience of the doctor, the type of movement and the level of cooperation on the part of the patient.

- In 2026, the question is no longer whether it can be treated with eliners at all, but how predictable, effective and honest it is to treat this particular case.

There are relatively simple cases where eliners are really convenient and effective. For example, moderate crowding, small gaps, not too difficult tooth movements, high demand for aesthetics and good discipline. There are situations where treatment becomes more difficult. This does not mean that eliners are impossible. But it is necessary to discuss the forecast, the timing and the likelihood of additional stages in a particularly honest manner.

Patients come not for a diagnosis, but for a product

One of the most common mistakes before starting treatment is that a person has already decided, “I only want eliners.” Not because it is the best option for him, but because you do not want braces.

- This is the wrong start, says Andrei Zhuk. Modern orthodontics begins not with the choice of a beautiful system, but with the choice of the right tactics. Sometimes eliners really are the best way. Sometimes you need a combination approach. And sometimes it is fairer to say that another tool will give a more reliable result.

A digital plan is a prediction, not a magic promise

When the patient sees a beautiful virtual animation, where the teeth smoothly and perfectly become in a row, it seems that this is what will happen in reality. But true biology is always more complicated.

Systematic reviews of recent years show that the accuracy of the implementation of planned movements in eliners depends on the type of movement. Some movements are more predictable, others are worse. And additional stages of correction, the so-called refining, are required quite often.

Little things determine the outcome

Many people think that the main thing is just to wear caps. In fact, much more is important: how the kapa sat down, whether there are cracks, whether the attachments are in place, whether you wear gums, if they are assigned, whether you have lost the kapa, whether you moved to the next stage ahead of time, do not forget to put them back after eating.

- After eating or drinking, brush your teeth before re-installing the eliner. Drinking in them is only water, recalls Andrei Zhuk. Eliners move their teeth in very small steps. If you break a few of these steps in a row, the whole system starts to work worse.

Eliners are not always faster

This is another popular myth. With good patient selection, eliners can be very effective. But if the indications are chosen poorly or the patient does not comply with the regimen, treatment is easily delayed.

- Therefore, the question should not sound “what is faster in general”, but “what is faster and more reliable in my case,” the orthodontist emphasizes.

Eliners are about lifestyle, not just aesthetics

On the one hand, this is a huge advantage: the caps can be removed for an important meeting, photo session, dinner or performance. There are no strict restrictions on food, it is easier to brush your teeth, less visibility in the frame. That is why eliners are so popular with adults, public people and those who care about appearance in the treatment process.

On the other hand, all this works only if you know how to manage your regime. Otherwise, to undergo treatment qualitatively can be banal difficult.
