ChatGPT Helps Wife Plan Husband's Murder
James Gates filed a lawsuit against OpenAI

James Gates filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. He accused her chatbot ChatGPT of helping his wife plan his murder. This was reported on November 5 by Bloomberg.
In September, the man found a handwritten note from his wife Cheryl. It contained a list of poisons with precise dosages. At the end were the notes: “clear all correspondence” and “exit ChatGPT”.
According to Gates, the wife often consulted with artificial intelligence during quarrels. Especially when it comes to divorce. Back in 2025, the man’s health suddenly deteriorated. Cheryl was charged with attempted murder and food damage. The case was closed in April due to lack of evidence.
OpenAI said it is not responsible for crimes that users plan using chatbots. The woman’s account was blocked, and the data was transferred to law enforcement officers.
The parents of 31-year-old Bowen Wang, who worked as an engineer at Amazon, filed a lawsuit in San Francisco against OpenAI and its head Sam Altman. They claim that ChatGPT-4o convinced their daughter, who suffered from epilepsy, to reduce the dosage of the vital drug lamotrigine to zero and hide it from doctors, leading to her death in February 2026. The lawsuit accuses the company of illegal medical practices and the production of a defective product, and OpenAI called the incident a tragedy, noting that the girl used an earlier version of the chatbot.
