Trucker Utkin killed nine people and shifted the blame on others
Anatoly Utkin was detained after the murder of a colleague at a cloth factory in Barysh

On February 8, 1973, a fire broke out in the control room of the Gladyshev cloth factory. During the extinguishment, the body of Valentina Isayeva was found. She worked as a dispatcher and as a cashier: that evening she received money for the employees of the garage and horse yard.
Utkin, the driver of the same factory, knew about the salary. He killed a colleague, found the key to the safe, but couldn't open the door. He set fire to the room and took Isayeva’s purse, which contained her own salary. The rest of the workers' money was left in the safe.
There was a bucket left at the crime scene in which he brought a diesel fuel. The operatives checked the factory transport and established that the bucket was taken from the bus assigned to Utkin. On February 9, the driver was arrested.
During the search, Utkin found Isayeva’s purse, a gun stolen on December 26, 1972 from the guard room of the factory, and things from the Soyuzpechat kiosk, robbed on February 7, 1973.
The found jewelry, as it was later established, belonged to Galina Ruzanova. The woman was killed on December 22, 1972, her body was found in a ravine near Mullovka.
The search provided evidence for two murders and two thefts. Investigators checked the dates and routes of Utkin’s business trips. He worked in the car farm No. 2, "Ulyanovskstroytrans", then at the cloth factory and traveled around the region and beyond. The investigation returned to the unsolved murders of the late 1960s.
October 8, 1968 in Barysh Utkin attacked Strogonova. Despite the stab wounds, the woman resisted, broke out and called for help. Neighbors ran out to scream. Strogonova remembered a truck near the scene of the attack.
The car was not immediately identified. Victim didn't recognize the truck from the photos. The make and model were installed later.
On October 30, 1972, he tried to kill another resident of Barysh, Skirdonova. Utkin wounded her with a knife, but the woman managed to escape the pursuer.
After the driver was arrested, both women identified him.
Judge Boris Lagunov wrote that Utkin from the beginning of the investigation denied the murders of three girls — Makarova, Aksenova and Stoyak. Lagunov worked in the regional court during the trial. His story was included in the book “Ulyanovsk Regional Court, 70 years old”, published in 2013.
March 31, 1968 Utkin went by truck to Moscow. Near Baidulin Terengul district in the cabin of the village 14-year-old Lisa Makarova. She had to go to Terenga, to her mother's hospital.
Utkin raped and killed Lisa, the body was thrown into the river near Penza. He took his watch, clothes and a bag of groceries. The girl was found about two months later. The family had to go for identification in a neighboring area.
On September 25 of the same year, during a business trip to Moscow, he met 13-year-old Tatiana Aksenova on a street in the Penza region and killed her.
On November 28, in Ulyanovsk, Utkin offered to take a 10-year-old girl named Stoyak to school. Instead of school, he took him out of town and killed him. After the reconstruction of 73online.ru, the mother recognized her daughter by the sock she knit.
In all three cases, the court found Utkin guilty.
Utkin confessed to other murders. At the crime scenes in the presence of witnesses showed and told what he had done. He later retracted some of this testimony.
On June 27, 1968, returning from Ulyanovsk to Barysh, Utkin picked up 17-year-old Valentina Ananicheva near Bestuzhevka. The girl was heading to a nearby village. He took her to the woods, raped and killed her, taking her watch, shoes and food.
On May 28, 1969, Utkin killed a woman in Ulyanovsk. He followed her on foot and attacked her as she entered the courtyard. By this time, the death toll had reached five.
In August, he was convicted of robbery and sent to the colony for three years. The murders remained unsolved. He was released in 1972.
On December 6, 1972, at the Barysh bus station, he picked up Nikolai Ignatiev, who needed to go to Ulyanovsk. He killed a passenger and took the money. The body was found in a ravine under a bridge. Ignatiev was the only man among the nine dead.
On December 15, at the bus station of Ulyanovsk, a woman drove to the airport. Utkin raped and killed her, the body was found in Sviyaga. In the published history of the criminal case, the passenger remained unidentified.
A week later, Ruzanova died. The ninth and final victim was Isayeva, who was killed at the factory in February 1973.
On August 6, 1973, the joint case was accepted by the investigator for particularly important cases under the Prosecutor General of the USSR Yuri Lyubimov. The brigade included prosecutors of the Ulyanovsk and Penza regions.
Among the evidence Lagunov described were the results of biological examinations. The sperm found in the victims according to group characteristics corresponded to Utkin’s blood group.
Different people could have the same group traits, so such a match alone could not determine who left the tracks. For which victims received this result, Lagunov did not specify.
In August 1974, the investigation was completed. The Ulyanovsk Regional Court received 34 volumes.
The trial, chaired by Judge Vitaly Shorin, began on 28 October 1974. Over the years, some witnesses and victims have moved. They were called from Perm, Ryazan and from the Kuril Islands. The families of the victims needed medical attention during the meeting.
Inpatient forensic psychiatric examination at the Serbian Institute recognized Utkin sane. Utkin called the culprits Viktor Shch. and Oleg T. According to Lagunov, this version was checked by the investigation and the court. It turned out that both men had never lived in Ulyanovsk.
In his final statement, Utkin denied admitting to the murders of Ananicheva, a woman who died in May 1969 and an unidentified passenger. He said he had slandered himself.
On December 13, 1974, the court found him guilty and imposed the death penalty. In addition to nine murders, the case included assassination attempts, rape and theft.
In his appeals, Utkin denied the attacks on Strogonova and Skirdonova, both women who survived and identified him after his arrest.
In March 1975, the Supreme Court of the RSFSR left the sentence unchanged. Utkin asked for a pardon. On August 25, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR rejected the petition. On September 12, 1975, the sentence was executed.
