Fraudsters lured 152 million rubles under the guise of issuing loans
Police in Busan, South Korea, handed over materials to prosecutors against two men over 50 suspected of involvement in large-scale phone fraud schemes

South Korean police in Busan handed over materials to prosecutors in relation to two men over the age of 50 suspected of involvement in major telephone fraud schemes. One of them, according to investigators, led a criminal group that lured money under the pretext of issuing loans. The second allegedly provided scammers with malicious mobile applications to intercept calls. The total damage in the two episodes is estimated at about 2.5 billion won, according to the Seoul Economic Daily.
According to investigators, the alleged organizer of the credit fraud led a group whose members operated from the Chinese province of Guangdong and other places. Fraudsters called potential borrowers, presented themselves as employees of financial institutions and offered to issue a loan.
However, before receiving the promised money, customers had to fulfill additional conditions. Callers urged them to pay a fee for improving their credit rating or to transfer insurance premiums. Under these pretexts, the attackers received money from people who expected to approve the loan.
According to police, the group operated from at least June 2013 to July 2015. During this period, its victims were 145 people, who in total lost about 1.5 billion won.
The second defendant is suspected of technical support of telephone scams. The investigation believes that the man developed and supplied fraudulent groups with malicious applications capable of intercepting phone calls.
Such software allowed attackers to interfere with the victims’ telephone communications. According to police, the use of such applications is associated with fraudulent operations, as a result of which 125 people lost about 1 billion won.
Both suspects were previously outside South Korea. The police investigated their alleged involvement in fraudulent schemes and handed over the material collected to prosecutors.
Thus, in the two cases investigated, there are 270 victims and damages totaling about 2.5 billion won. At the same time, law enforcement agencies consider the different roles of suspects. The first is charged with organizing telephone fraud with the offer of loans, the second is developing and supplying software used to deceive citizens.
