Unknown brutally killed a politician and three police officers

Four people, including Guatemalan MP Julio Cesar Portillo Paz, were killed in an armed attack in the Sacapa department. The crime was committed in the municipality of Rio Ondo, reports Reuters.

The attackers opened fire on the politician's car on the 137th kilometer of the Atlantic Highway. Three National Civil Police officers accompanying the deputy died on the spot. They tried to protect him from his attackers. Portillo Paz was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but he could not be saved.

According to the Interior Ministry, police officers engaged in a shootout with the attackers.

The Guatemalan prosecutor's office examined the crime scene and collected physical evidence, including casings. Investigators identify those involved in the attack.

President Bernardo Arévalo condemned the killing and instructed law enforcement agencies to assist the prosecutor's office in the investigation.
