Killed seven women Ekaterinburg maniac helped to find the surviving victim
In the spring of 2006 in Yekaterinburg, patrols were reinforced in the ZhBI microdistrict, where killed women were found. Some were strangled, others died from stab wounds, and the police still doubted that one person was acting. When the photo sketch of the wanted person was shown on television, Victoria Aitova remembered a friend. She's already survived his attack, and he got a suspended sentence.

In 2004, Dmitry Karimov accompanied Victoria after a date.
On the way through the garage co-op, he attacked the girl and began strangling her with a rope. Victoria passed out.
Karimov thought she was dead, took her mobile phone and left her in a ditch under a heating track. Later, in a serial murder trial, it was revealed that he had committed sexual assault during the attack.
When she woke up, she reached the car park nearby. As Kommersant described, the guards helped her pack her things and get home.
Victoria went to the police, but told only about the blow and the stolen phone. She did not report suffocation or rape at the time. Later explained: recently got a job and did not want unnecessary problems.
The October district court of Yekaterinburg convicted Karimov for robbery. He was given 2 years of probation. He remained at large.
At the end of December 2005, the body of 35-year-old Elena Kolesnikova was found near Lake Shartash. She lived with her mother and young daughter. She was strangled with her hands.
In February, the victims were found with stab wounds. One - under the bridge between the district ZhBI and Malyshev street, the other - on February 23 near the medical school in the area of Lilac Boulevard.
On the night of March 12-13, a 24-year-old accountant returning from a disco was killed. She was raped and strangled. The body was found in the entrance of the house on the street Novgorodtseva.
ZBI is a microdistrict of the plant of reinforced concrete products. By his name, the criminal will later be nicknamed “Maniac with ZBI”. However, in mid-March, police were not yet sure that there was one killer behind the bodies found here.
On March 14, the Kirov prosecutor’s office explained to local media that the last three murders are not in a hurry to connect with each other. The version of the series was considered, a separate criminal case was investigated for each case.
The next day, the Kirov police department said that the nature of the damage and the circumstances of the attacks suggest different criminals. Common for the victims called the area of detection of bodies.
At the same time, police increased patrols by employees from other parts of the city. The duty was organized around the clock, at night there were hidden surveillance groups. Women were advised not to walk alone, especially in the dark: the then known police killings took place after midnight.
In the documentary Seizure of Steel from the Criminal Chronicles series, investigators described how they checked the phones stolen from the victims.
First, they found a person who used the SIM card of the deceased. During the interrogation, he explained that he picked her up on the street. The find was witnesses, the alibi of the man was also confirmed. Suspicion was cleared of him.
Then one of the stolen phones appeared online. The buyer used it. He said that he bought the device from a stranger, remembered the seller and was able to describe his appearance.
Two friends who survived the attack also contacted the police. One managed to escape and report the incident, later it became known that the second was saved. After their appeal, they made a photo sketch of the wanted person and showed it on television.
Image seen by Victoria Aitov. As she later explained, there was no complete resemblance, but the signs resembled a familiar one. Victoria decided to report her suspicions and called the police the name of Dmitry Karimov.
He was arrested on March 22, 2006. Karimov lived on the Blue Stones, next door to ZhBI, and worked as a mason in Terem LLC.
At the first interrogation, he confessed to two murders. Officers took him to crime scenes and checked his testimony. Confessions in other attacks followed.
On March 24, the Kirov district prosecutor’s office charged Karimov and the court detained him. Initially, he was charged with four murders in the Kirov district from late December 2005 to mid-March 2006, robbery and rape. The regional prosecutor's office already had information about his possible involvement in crimes in other parts of the city.
One of the confessions concerned a schoolgirl who had gone missing before the winter killings on ZBI.
On November 28, 2005, 15-year-old Tatiana Shugaeva did not come to class and did not return home. She was wanted as a missing person. For more than four months, the body remained in Mayakovsky Park.
On April 5, 2006, he was found in the place indicated by Karimov. According to media reports, the suspect said that he hid the corpse under foliage, mud and snow.
On that November day, he met Tatiana in the park and asked to see the children's railway. The girl agreed and went with him. On the path, Karimov attacked her and strangled her, after which he took a mobile phone, a gold chain and 700 rubles.
Tatiana's murder came almost a month ahead of a period that covered the initial charge of four murders.
The investigation went beyond the ZBI. On April 6, it became known that the case was transferred from the district prosecutor's office to the department for investigating particularly important cases of the prosecutor's office of the Sverdlovsk region. As a result, it covered crimes in the Kirov, October and Lenin districts of Yekaterinburg.
The age of the victims, according to the final reports of the prosecutor’s office and the court, ranged from 15 to 56 years. The circumstances of the attacks also varied. Karimov could introduce himself to a visitor who does not know the city well and ask him to show him the way. In other cases, he was called a police officer, checked documents and offered to go to the station. Sometimes he attacked suddenly, without first talking.
In the first weeks after his arrest, his possible involvement in eight murders was investigated. It was a preliminary count: the final charge included seven murders. The regional prosecutor's office announced the completion of the investigation on December 7, 2006.
Karimov was also charged with attempted murder, seven episodes of rape and six robberies. The case covered the period from July 2004 to March 2006 - including the attack on Victoria, after which he had already received a suspended sentence for robbery.
On December 25, a closed trial began in the Sverdlovsk Regional Court. The defendant was 28 years old. Before the trial, he admitted the murders, but denied sexual assault, claiming that some women agreed to intimacy.
Meanwhile, sexual violence against part of the victims was confirmed by examination. Experts have identified Karimov personality disorder, but recognized sane: he could control his actions.
The state prosecution demanded life imprisonment. The court heard the case for about three months.
On March 15, 2007 the judge of the Sverdlovsk Regional Court Alexander Svartsev announced the verdict. Dmitry Karimov was sentenced to life imprisonment in a special regime penal colony.
The court satisfied the claims of the representatives of the three victims, awarding each 500 thousand rubles. Another 50 thousand rubles were recovered in favor of the surviving victim.
Russia's Supreme Court left the sentence unchanged. On September 11, 2007, the sentence entered into force. In July 2025, it was reported that Karimov was serving a sentence in the Solikamsk colony “White Swan”.
On the day of the verdict, he sat with his back to the room. A journalist present in the courtroom watched as after reading the decision, the relatives of the victims began to shout accusations against the convict. Karimov himself did not react to the life sentence.
