Shares of fertilizer producers fell in anticipation of the US-Belarus deal
Shares of North American companies fell after US President Donald Trump revealed plans to purchase potash fertilizers in Belarus. They must compete with more expensive imports from Canada

Shares of North American companies producing fertilizers fell at the end of trading on Monday, September 21: securities of Canadian Nutrien lost on the NYSE 3.3%, American CF Industries and Mosaic - 3.5 and 1.7%, respectively. On Tuesday, the decline in all companies continued.
Papers are falling amid US President Donald Trump's announcement of plans to purchase potash fertilizers in Belarus to lower prices for American farmers and squeeze more expensive Canadian imports. This is reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Potassium fertilizers are minerals that are added to the soil to provide potassium to plants, improve their growth, increase yields and resistance to disease.
U.S. farmers have faced rising fertilizer and fuel prices because of the war in Iran. On Monday, Trump said on social media that he was working on a “massive deal” that would help farmers by supplying cheaper fertilizers from Belarus, a close ally of Russia.
The United States is working on a large-scale deal to purchase potash fertilizers from Belarus. “The price will be well below what we’re paying Canada right now, which is great news for our farmers and pastoralists,” Trump said in a statement.
The U.S. has virtually stopped importing potash fertilizers from Belarus and Russia since the Ukraine conflict began in 2022. Canada annually supplies potash fertilizers worth about $ 4 billion to the United States. Trump’s decision to rely more on Belarus comes amid strained trade relations between the United States and Canada.
In the summer of 2021, the United States imposed sectoral sanctions against Belaruskali and the Belarusian Potash Company, limiting their ability to supply fertilizers. In March 2026, Washington lifted these restrictions.
After the lifting of sanctions, Belarus resumed supplies of potash fertilizers to the United States. In September, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the Belarusian side already sends products to American buyers. At the same time, it will not be possible to increase the volume of supplies in the near future: all products for the current year have already been contracted.
