Berkshire shares rise to record 10 months after leaving Buffett

Shares of Berkshire Hathaway class "B" on Wednesday, October 21, rose 0.65% and peaked at $543.34, according to trading data on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Papers reached a new historical maximum, overcoming the consequences of the departure of Warren Buffett from the post of CEO, writes Bloomberg.

Before that, the highest level of stock prices for Berkshire Hathaway was recorded the day before Warren Buffett’s announcement of his resignation from the post of CEO of the conglomerate on May 2, 2025 at $542.07.

Then the stock fell for several months, as investors feared that the departure of Buffett will negatively affect the results of the company.

Warren Buffett is the largest shareholder in Berkshire Hathaway. He headed the company since 1965, and in December 2025 left the post of CEO. On January 1, 2026, he was replaced by Greg Abel, who was previously Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Energy.

In his 10 months as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, Greg Abel resumed share buybacks and struck two multibillion-dollar deals: expanding the company’s housing operations with the acquisition of Taylor Morrison Home and backing Google’s parent company’s artificial intelligence investments.

In mid-September 2026, Warren Buffett stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and became honorary chairman, retaining a seat on the board. He was replaced by his son Howard Buffett.

Earlier, Reuters estimated that Warren Buffett has donated more than half of his Berkshire Hathaway shares to charity since he began giving away his fortune in 2006. He does it every year. For many years, the largest recipient of donations was the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. But Buffett stepped down from the foundation's board of trustees in 2021, shortly after Bill and Melinda Gates announced their divorce. In 2026, the billionaire refused to donate money to the Gates Foundation after a series of revelations regarding his founder's ties to American financier Jeffrey Epstein.

In July, it became known that Buffett will donate all of his shares of Berkshire Hathaway to charity. By 2034, he will have lost his stake in the company.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Warren Buffett is worth $153 billion. In the world ranking of billionaires, he ranks 10th. Much of Buffett's fortune stems from his stake in Berkshire Hathaway.
