Denis Duk: National Unity Day reminds Belarusians of the right to independently determine the future
What National Unity Day means for Belarus and why it is important not to allow the fate of the country to be decided again without the participation of its people.

The events of 1939 became only a trigger for the processes that led to the formation of the modern Belarusian nation, Denis Duk, rector of the Academy of Management under the President of the Republic of Belarus, said on the air of the ONT talk show “ObjectiveNo”. According to him, the Day of National Unity is intended to emphasize the historical unity of Belarusians and is not aimed at opposing Belarus to Poland.
The events of 1939 are but the trigger of the processes that we are announcing to the world today. That we are one nation. And we forged this unity long before the events of 1939, Duc said.
The historian noted that the processes of formation of national unity of Belarusians have deeper roots and go back to the XV-XVII centuries. During this period, colonization policies and various forms of resistance were manifested in the Belarusian lands.

According to the historian, peaceful life in Belarus is the result of the struggle of ancestors for the right to independently determine the fate of their country.
“The fact that today we live in a peaceful country is given to us by God, this is the right that our ancestors won,” said the rector of the Academy of Management.
Duk recalled that the Day of National Unity became a national holiday after the relevant decision was made by the decree of the President of Belarus. The purpose of the date is not to create a border between Belarusians and Poles, but to prevent the repetition of historical scenarios, when the fate of the Belarusian lands was decided without the participation of their inhabitants.
He also drew a parallel with the events of the XVI century, when, according to him, geopolitical decisions were made without taking into account the interests of Belarusians.
“We are fighting to ensure that the sixteenth century is not repeated again – this is a union, when in fact no one asked us, when the geopolitical card was played without the participation of Belarusians,” he said.

The historian separately mentioned the Lublin Union, as a result of which the Commonwealth was created. Belarusians have repeatedly become the object of external political influence.
We were used, as in the XVI century, for example in the same Union of Lublin, when the so-called Commonwealth was formed. And today we must do everything to ensure that this does not happen again, concluded Duc.
