Arms race has diverted most of the resources that would serve peaceful purposes – Aleynik

The arms race has absorbed most of the resources that should have served peaceful purposes. This was stated by the Chairman of the Standing Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on International Affairs and National Security Sergey Aleynik in his speech at the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held in Tanzania.

“The devaluation of international law, military conflicts, climate change, trade wars and illegal sanctions all make our world fragile and vulnerable,” Aleinik said.

The efforts that humanity has made to combat hunger, pandemics and poverty, prevent environmental disasters and other modern challenges in the context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals are set back decades. The arms race encouraged by the Western lobby has diverted most of the resources that should have served peaceful purposes. Today, there are almost no issues that have not been politicized and faced with the multipolarity of opinions.”.

The Chairman of the Standing Committee believes that parliamentarians, as representatives of the peoples of their countries, should promote the development of interstate relations on the basis of mutual respect and inviolability of the principle of sovereign equality of states.

“It is in our power to promote a unifying agenda, and not to succumb to trends that divide countries and peoples,” Sergey Aleynik continued. In this context, we consider the role of parliamentarians in the implementation of the sustainable development agenda important. It is parliaments that translate the global Sustainable Development Goals into national laws, thereby creating the necessary legal framework.”.

The Belarusian speaker stressed that the Inter-Parliamentary Union plays a key role, acting as an authoritative global platform for developing common standards and exchanging best legislative practices, including in the field of public administration.
