Finnish Prime Minister Orpo will demand from the EU to completely close the issuance of tourist visas to Russians

Helsinki is initiating a radical tightening of visa restrictions for Russian citizens at the pan-European level. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo plans to submit a proposal for a complete ban on travel to the next meeting of the European Council, arguing for security reasons.

The Finnish authorities intend to achieve a complete cessation of Schengen tourist visas for Russian citizens at the level of the entire European Union. The official initiative to introduce a total visa ban will be made by Prime Minister of the Republic Petteri Orpo.

Speaking on the Ykkösaamu program of Yle TV and radio company, the head of the Finnish government stressed that he would raise this issue as a priority at the highest level. According to the politician, specific restrictive measures will be officially presented to European colleagues at the upcoming meeting of the European Council.

“Next week, I will propose a concrete measure to stop issuing tourist visas to Russians to travel to Europe,” Orpo said.

The Finnish Prime Minister said that the radical position of Helsinki is dictated solely by national and regional security considerations.
