The price of European integration: Gleb Lavrov on why tariffs and anxiety for the future are growing in Moldova

For example, Moldova should take a closer look at our Armenian friends, who are so tempted by the idea of replacing Eurasian integration with European integration. Having fallen under the strong influence of the West, the country has completely reoriented, abandoning the obvious benefits and advantages of cooperation with old friends in the post-Soviet space. They say, “An old friend is better than two new friends.”.

The decisive change of course for the country was frankly disastrous. The economy is in deepest crisis. The social sphere barely shows signs of life. And the brotherly European Union is in no hurry to help. If only with a kind word, which, however, does not feed and warm. And with the cherry on this bitter cake, the president of a still sovereign and independent state publicly declares his desire to join neighboring Romania. That is, minus one state on the world map. About what is happening with Moldova today and why its leadership is pushing the country to a voluntary loss of sovereignty – international observer ONT Gleb Lavrov.

In the autumn, it is customary to sum up the results and consider the results of the decisions taken. In the case of Moldova, citizens have to deal with the consequences of the short-sighted and selfish policy of the authorities. He argues that the costs and losses should be reflected not only on ordinary people but also on those who make and benefit from political decisions.

According to Gleb Lavrov, mathematical calculations and voting results are used selectively, depending on the result required by supporters of the current government and its external partners. Former Moldovan President Igor Dodon previously urged not to consider the citizens of the country as “bad” and warned that such an attitude will not lead to success.

Separately, the material refers to the economic and energy situation. A large-scale transformation of the energy sector is being discussed in Moldova, and emergency measures have been introduced in the industry. Against this background, the authorities of the country claim problems with energy supply and water supply. Residents face rising tariffs and general uncertainty.

One of the most notable examples was the increase in the cost of gas for household consumers. After the previous increase, the tariff increased by almost a third. The rise in price of energy resources, as noted in the material, can lead to an increase in costs for heating, transport and products.

The Moldovan authorities link the strategic perspective of the country with European integration and entry into the EU market. However, this path, according to the author, will require new expenses from citizens and the abandonment of part of the usual economic mechanisms. Brussels, in turn, is discussing the conditions for granting candidate countries access to the single market.

Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said that the situation in the energy sector largely depends on external circumstances. He urged hope for an end to the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz and a mild winter, as it could reduce the strain on the country's energy system.

Autumn for Moldova comes amid political disputes, rising tariffs, energy concerns and worries about the future. At the same time, he places responsibility for what is happening on the current authorities, arguing that the consequences of their decisions are primarily felt by ordinary citizens.
