Today, an important and tragic date is celebrated in the region - the Day of Remembrance of the residents of the villages burned by the Nazi invaders and punishers. This memorable date was established on the initiative of the Governor of the Pskov region Mikhail Vedernikov to preserve the historical truth about the atrocities of the invaders.
The date of October 22 was not chosen by chance. Exactly 83 years ago, in 1943, a punitive detachment of the 37th Estonian police battalion under the command of Majorg Kurg barbarously destroyed the village of Laneva Gora, Pskov district, along with its inhabitants. With this brutal action, the fascists took revenge on the local population for the successful attack of the partisans on their convoy. More than 60 civilians were shot, most of them women and children.
The scale of the tragedy that befell Pskov during the Great Patriotic War is striking. According to expert data, during the occupation in the region were killed more than 70 thousand civilians and completely destroyed more than five thousand villages. The most bitter statistics say that one in five of the burned villages never managed to revive, they are forever disappeared from the map of the region.
To this memorable date, mourning rallies, laying flowers at memorials and patriotic lessons in schools are timed throughout the region.
