This day is dedicated to the miraculous appearance of the Mother of God in Constantinople, when she spread her omophorion (coverage) over praying people, protecting the city from enemies. For St. Petersburgers, this autumn holiday traditionally symbolizes heavenly intercession, peace and the imminent onset of winter.
The festive Divine Liturgy in the main church of St. Petersburg was performed by Archpriest Andrei Gerasimov. After the service, the clergy and parishioners turned with prayers to the Most Holy Mother of God for protection and well-being.
