Pope Leo XIV removed the lower lobe of the right lung, which was a malignant tumor. The diagnosis of "lung adenocarcinoma" confirmed a histological study conducted during surgery. This was reported by the press service of the Holy See.
The pontiff underwent scheduled lung surgery on October 13. As specified by the doctors of the Pope Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritor, the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma was assumed by the results of preoperative studies.
The Pope spent about three hours in the operating room, while the surgery itself lasted about 90 minutes. The operation, as previously reported by the Holy See, was successful, without complications.
