In the RAS warned about the risk of increased mortality due to antibiotics
According to forecasts, in 25-30 years, antibiotic resistance will become one of the leading causes of global mortality, comparable in scale to cancer, said Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific Director of the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University.
According to forecasts, in 25-30 years, antibiotic resistance will become one of the leading causes of global mortality, comparable in scale to cancer, said Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific Director of the Faculty of Chemistry of Lomonosov Moscow State University Stepan Kalmykov.
“In 25-30 years, more will die from antibiotic resistance than from oncology,” he said.
Antibiotic resistance is the ability of bacteria and other microorganisms to survive and multiply when exposed to antibiotics that used to kill them. Uncontrolled use of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture has become a global threat, undermining the effectiveness of the fight against infections.
According to the Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the BRICS+ countries are actively discussing biosafety issues, including the problem of antibiotic resistance and the risks of new infections. The agenda of international scientific cooperation also includes the topics of energy, climate and ecology. Separately, Kalmykov stressed the importance of food security as a tool to combat poverty in developing regions of the world.
In September, scientists of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor developed a test system to identify a gene for bacterial resistance to antibiotics. The sensitivity of the new platform is comparable to standard PCR analysis, and for some targets may exceed it.
