The police of the Vietnamese province of Anjiang has uncovered a criminal group that deceived tourists by creating fake pages of five-star hotels on the island of Phu Quoc, reports ATOR, citing the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam.
According to the agency, the attackers posted photos of luxury hotels and attractive prices in social networks, bought advertising, twisted subscribers and reactions. Tourists transferred an advance payment for the reservation, which did not actually exist, after which the “hotel representatives” stopped communicating.
Anjiang police reported the group's disclosure. Ten people have been prosecuted. According to the investigation, 60 victims were identified, 17 of them transferred money to the accounts of the fictitious company KOKOSA. Investigators are checking 229 bank accounts, through which more than 6 trillion dong (about $231 million) passed.
Earlier, the European Commission launched an investigation into possible fraudulent schemes on the popular website for booking hotels Booking.com. The regulator will check whether the service does enough to protect users from fraudulent ads and phishing.
The Dutch Consumer Complaints Report recorded 1,072 fraud reports on Booking.com in the first half of 2026.
