Taiwan almost completely suspended schools and offices on October 23 in anticipation of Super Typhoon Champie. This is reported by Reuters, citing local authorities and the Central Meteorological Administration of Taiwan.

Almost 1,300 residents were evacuated from mountainous areas due to typhoon threats.

The Ministry of Transport announced the cancellation of all 262 domestic flights scheduled for October 23 and 669 international flights. Schools and offices continue to operate normally only on the Taiwan-controlled Jinmen Islands off the coast of mainland China.

On October 21, China Airlines and Tigerair Taiwan canceled some flights between Taiwan and Okinawa. Airlines advised passengers to keep an eye on schedule updates.

According to meteorologists, Champi was located about 320 km east of the southern tip of Taiwan. Gusts of wind near its center reached 191 km / h. The typhoon is weakening and, according to the forecast, should not go directly to land on the island, but will bring strong winds and downpours.

Residents of coastal settlements received warnings on mobile phones about wind gusts over 150 km / h with an appeal to immediately take shelter. In the northern mountainous regions, including in the vicinity of Taipei, almost a meter of precipitation is predicted.

In northeastern Yilan County, authorities hand out sandbags and prepared amphibious vehicles and inflatable lifeboats. The typhoon is expected to pass near the area on October 23, Reuters reported.

“If necessary, the military will come to the aid of people, including using amphibious vehicles for evacuation and disaster relief,” said the head of the port city of Suao Li Mingcheng.

According to Taiwanese forecasters, the radius of the typhoon is about 320 km – enough to cover most of the island. Its impact can be felt for almost two days.

On October 18, the Associated Press, citing American meteorologists, reported on the strengthening of the Chumpy to a supertyphoon of the fifth category. Reuters calls it one of the strongest storms in the Pacific this year.

According to the forecast given by Reuters, the Champi will first pass over the Japanese island of Yonaguni in Okinawa prefecture, then near northeastern Taiwan, then turn north towards the Chinese coast and subsequently head to southern Japan.
