In Germany, the former tea house of Adolf Hitler – Kellsteinhaus, located in Bavaria at an altitude of 1834 m above Berchtesgaden, caught fire. Police suspect arson, according to Bild.
The signal of the fire came shortly after 21:00 (22:00 GMT) on Friday. When firefighters and police arrived at the site, the building was already completely engulfed in flames, and significant forces were deployed to extinguish it.
According to the newspaper, on the way to the scene of the incident, the police met a motorcyclist who was driving towards them. Officers stopped and detained him. The man's involvement in the fire has not yet been established.
According to preliminary data of law enforcement agencies, there were no victims, at the time of the fire no one was in the building. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle's Nest, is a building in the Bavarian Alps at an altitude of 1834 m above Berchtesgaden. Built between 1937 and 1938 as a teahouse for Hitler and a place to welcome foreign diplomats and guests, Hitler rarely visited it. During the Second World War, the building was not damaged.
Since 1952, it has hosted a mountain restaurant and an exhibition on the site’s history and connection to the Nazi regime. Now Kellsteinhaus is a tourist attraction and belongs to the federal state of Bavaria.
In July, the Austrian city of Braunau opened a police station in the house where Hitler was born.
In front of the building preserved a memorial stone, installed in 1989, reports Reuters. “There will never be fascism again,” reads the inscription on the memorial.
Stefan Mlzoch, head of the historical department of the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, told the press that the goal was to exclude any association with Hitler and “deprive the building of this mysticism.”.
The house became the property of the Austrian government in 2016. Before the expropriation of the building from the former owner, the authorities rented it to prevent the house from becoming a neo-Nazis landmark.
In 2019, the building was repurposed into a police station.
Hitler was born in Braunau in 1889 and his family moved out when he was three. After Hitler came to power in Germany in 1938, the Nazis bought the house. In 1952, seven years after the death of the dictator, the building was returned to the first owners - the Pommer family.
