80 years turned into 20: scientists have discovered an unexpected mechanism of rejuvenation
German scientists have made an unusual breakthrough in the study of aging

German scientists have made an unusual breakthrough in the study of aging. They managed to turn the blood cells of an 80-year-old man into stem cells whose biological age was less than 20 years. The experiment was conducted by specialists from the University of Bonn and the University Hospital Bonn. The study was published in the scientific journal Aging Cell.
To do this, the researchers used a special cell reprogramming technology. With its help, erythrocyte precursor cells were converted into neural stem cells, from which nerve cells can subsequently be grown. At the same time, their peculiar internal clock, reflecting accumulated age-related changes, began to move in the opposite direction.
The peculiarity of the experiment is that rejuvenation did not occur instantly, but gradually, over several weeks. The scientists followed the process for more than 100 days and were able to study in detail what changes occur inside the cells. According to study leader Professor Oliver Bryustle, such a model will help to identify substances and factors that can accelerate or slow down cellular rejuvenation.
The discovery could prove particularly useful for studying age-related brain diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. Since aging is considered one of the main risk factors for such disorders, understanding the mechanisms of cellular rejuvenation opens up new prospects for medicine. However, experts emphasize that so far it is only a laboratory experiment. Scientists have not yet succeeded in rejuvenating the entire human body in this way.
Scientists have found a link between lifestyle, genes and brain aging.
