Member of the Standing Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly on International Affairs and National Security Alla Smolyak at the opening of the fifth session of the Council of the Republic of the eighth convocation noted the key importance of historical memory in the life of Belarusians, the correspondent of the Minsk-Novosti news agency reports.
- Our fifth session symbolically begins on the eve of National Unity Day. This is a special day for all members of the Council of the Republic, because we are returning to legislative activities. But I must say that during the intersessional period, none of us rested: we accepted citizens’ appeals and met with labor collectives. Now we have come to work with new forces and proposals that need to be discussed and converted into useful bills. We celebrate the holiday with pride because we remember our history and are proud of our successes. National Unity Day is a very worthy holiday for our citizens. Every Belarusian today should realize that unity and peaceful life have been hard for us. Today we are obliged to protect our country, our people and multiply the results that we managed to achieve during the years of independence, Smolyak said.
