Last September was the hottest for the mainland of Spain in the history of continuous meteorological observations since 1961, reports Asharq Al-Awsat, citing consolidated climate bulletins. Average daily temperatures in the first autumn month were higher than traditional summer indicators.
According to the European Climate Service Copernicus (C3S) and national weather services, the temperature anomaly exceeded the long-term average by more than 2.5 degrees. A prolonged wave of subtropical heat has led to a series of absolute temperature records in both the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, where the number of so-called "tropical nights" has reached unprecedented levels.
Climate scientists are sounding the alarm because of the growing drought and falling water levels in the reservoirs of the southern and eastern provinces of the country. Extreme warming is increasing the burden on the agricultural sector and the energy system, forcing the authorities to introduce additional measures to rationally use water resources.
