Church holiday October 21, 2026: Triphon and Pelagia Day - signs, traditions and prohibitions
Today, October 21, 2026, Orthodox believers remember St. Pelagia of Antioch and St. Tryphon of Vyatsky

Who does the church remember
Saint Pelagia of Antioch lived in the fifth century. Before converting to Christianity, she was a famous harlot and dancer in Antioch, nicknamed Margarita (“the pearl”) for her love of luxury. Her life changed after Bishop Nonn preached the Last Judgment. Pelagia was baptized, distributed all property to the poor and, changing into men's clothes, retired to the Mount of Olives, where she asceticized in seclusion under the name of the monk Pelagia. The mystery of her sex was revealed only after her death around 457.
St. Tryphon Vyatsky is a native of the Arkhangelsk province, who dreamed of monasticism from a young age. He founded the Vyatka Assumption Monastery and became its first abbot. Tryphon is known as an enlightener of the Vyatka lands and a miracle worker. He died in 1612.
Folk traditions
In Russia, October 21 was called Pelageya-Christmas - because in this period the first real cold came. The peasants finished the autumn fieldwork and went on to household chores.
The second name of the day is Fixing. On this day, women sat down for yarn and weaving, and men were engaged in preparing equipment for the winter: repaired the harness, got along with carts, insulated at home. It was believed that from this day you should start wearing warm clothes.
It was also customary to cut cabbage on Pelagia – it was soaked for the winter in large barrels, often with the whole family or with neighbors.
Notes for October 21
If snow falls on Pelagia, the winter will be snowy, but not too harsh.
