Church holiday October 25, 2026: Andron Stargazer - signs, traditions and prohibitions
Today, on October 25, 2026, Orthodox believers celebrate the Week of the 21st through Pentecost and remember the holy martyrs Probus, Tarakh and Andronikos, as well as the memory of the holy fathers of the VII Ecumenical Council

Who does the church remember
The Martyrs Probus, Tarach, and Andronicus suffered for their faith about 304 in the city of Anazarbas in Asia Minor during the persecutions under the emperor Diocletian. When the ruler demanded that they sacrifice to the pagan gods, Christians refused, confessing their faith in Christ. They were severely tortured, but they remained adamant. There was an earthquake at the time of the execution, and many Gentiles believed when they saw it. The martyrs died around the year 304.
On the same day, the church honors the memory of the Holy Fathers of the VII Ecumenical Council (787), which restored the veneration of icons after the period of iconoclasm. The Council approved the dogma of icon worship, explaining that the honor given to the image goes back to the original.
Martyr Andronikos (the same name to the saint from among the three martyrs) in the popular consciousness gave the name of the day - Andron the Stargazer. He was known for his insight and ability to read the signs.
Folk traditions
In Russia, Andron Stargazer was considered the day when the stars can tell the weather and harvest. The peasants went out in the evening and watched the night sky.
From this day on, the first real cold weather began, and people finally switched to winter clothes. Also, on October 25, it was customary to do household chores: insulate windows, repair stoves, prepare the house for the winter.
Another tradition is divination by the stars. If the stars are bright and flickering, they wait for frosts, if dim - to the thaw.
