The case of the library of the Russian Academy of Sciences: ex-director Oleg Shorin arrested in Moscow for fraud

Zamoskvoretsky district court of Moscow has ruled on the arrest and detention of the former Director of the Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (BEN RAS) Oleg Shorin. The former head of the academic institution was charged with committing fraud on an especially large scale (part 4 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), the Kommersant newspaper reports.

Oleg Shorin headed the Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 2018 to 2023, after which he moved to the position of Director for Digital Transformation in the commercial real estate service Rently. The specific circumstances of the criminal case, the plot of theft and the amount of damage caused by the investigating authorities in the interests of secrecy of the investigation have not yet been disclosed.

The arrest of the former head of BEN RAS has become another link in a series of investigations of law enforcement agencies related to the expenditure of budgetary funds and financial and economic activities of subordinate institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The defense of the defendant failed to achieve a milder preventive measure, the accused was placed in a pre-trial detention center.
