November 17 according to the national calendar is celebrated the day of Erema

November 17 according to the national calendar is celebrated the day of Erema. On this date, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of two hieromartyrs – Nikander, Bishop of Mir, and Presbyter Hermey.
According to legend, Nikander and Hermey were disciples of St. Titus, a follower of the Apostle Paul. The saints converted many pagans to Christianity, for which they were persecuted: after cruel tortures, they were executed, but did not renounce their faith.
“Sit at home”: the main traditions of the day
In Russia, the day of Erema was surrounded by special beliefs and rules. The main popular commandment was: “Jeremah – stay at home.” It was believed that on November 17 it is better not to go out even in the yard, and especially beyond the fence - otherwise you can face evil spirits and cause trouble. The people said, “This is the day when the weather is over,” and they said, “This is the day when the weather is over.”.
Special attention was paid to the protection of the house. According to legend, evil spirits tried to enter the hut to drag hot coal from the oven. Therefore, they did not give fire to the neighbors, so that happiness did not leave the house. For protection over the windows and doors were drawn with chalk crosses, and on the window sills were laid clusters of ash. The hostess said: “Svetlana, hold the ray firmly, so that no garnish from the hut is pulled away by unclean force.”.
