Remembrance Day of the Apostle Philip: what can and cannot be done on October 24
The Orthodox Church remembers one of the twelve apostles

On October 24, believers honor the memory of the Apostle Philip, one of the twelve closest disciples of Christ. According to legend, he preached the Gospel in Galilee, Greece and other lands and was martyred in Hierapolis. In folk tradition, the day was called Filippov's Burner: it was believed that from October 24, the weather finally deteriorates, frosts and slush begin, and peasants complete autumn work and prepare for winter.

The main activity of the day is the completion of autumn affairs and preparation for winter. Housewives insulated the house, put in order winter clothes, went through supplies, and men repaired equipment and harness. It was also customary for Philip to sink baths and wash - it was believed that this helps to cleanse and strengthen health before the cold.
Another tradition is to help those in need: give alms, feed the hungry, support the elderly. It was considered a good thing to visit relatives, especially the elders. On this day, they also noticed the weather and made forecasts for the winter.
What not to do on October 24th
It was not recommended to go on a long road - it was believed that on this day the traveler could be in trouble, and the road would be difficult due to slush and frost. It is not necessary to be lazy and postpone household chores: they believed that those who idle on Philip would freeze all winter and suffer need.
You can not quarrel with loved ones, slander and gossip - they said that evil words can come back and harm the person. It was also not recommended to lend money or things: this could lead to losses. In addition, they avoided boasting and praising their successes - it was believed that this could lose luck.
