On October 23, the faithful honor the memory of the martyr Eulampius of Nicomedia and his sister Eulampia. According to legend, they lived at the beginning of the IV century in Nicomedia and suffered for their faith in Christ under the emperor Maximian: Eulampius was executed, and his sister, unable to withstand suffering, died before execution. In folk tradition, the day was called the Winter Indicator, since it was October 23 that the weather was noted and forecasts for the upcoming winter were built - hence the name.

What to do on October 23rd

The main activity of the day is to observe nature and notice signs. According to the weather on Eulampia, they judged what winter would be like: the colder and clearer the day, the harsher the winter was expected, and warm and damp weather foreshadowed mild and snowy. Also on this day it was customary to do household chores, prepare supplies for the winter and put the house in order.

Another tradition is to take care of elderly relatives and neighbors: they were given special attention, helped with the housework and prepared treats. It was considered a good thing to give alms or feed someone in need. Women spinned and woven on this day, and men were engaged in the repair of tools and equipment.

It was not recommended to go on a long road - it was believed that on this day the traveler could be in trouble, and the road would be difficult. It is not necessary to be lazy and postpone household chores: they believed that those who idle on Eulampia would endure need all year.
