Remembrance Day of the Hieromartyr Dionysius Areopagite: what can and cannot be done on October 16

History of the holiday

The Hieromartyr Dionysius lived in Athens in the first century. He came from a noble family, received a classical Hellenic education, studied philosophy and astronomy in Egypt. Returning to his homeland, Dionysius was elected a member of the Areopagus - the supreme Athenian court, which is why he received the nickname Areopagite.

According to legend, Dionysius witnessed a solar eclipse at the time of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Later he heard the preaching of the Apostle Paul in Athens, believed in Christ and was baptized. The apostle Paul ordained him bishop of Athens.

In 95, Dionysius went to Gaul with the presbyter Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius. In Lutetia (future Paris), they were captured, tortured and executed by sword beheading around 96.

The saint was called Denis Pozimnius. It was believed that from this day autumn begins to turn to winter: the first frosts, cold winds and lower blizzards come. The people said, “Denis is a snare.” The day was considered dangerous: according to legends, “autumn fevers” began to walk on the earth – evil spirits that sent diseases.
