History of the holiday

Dionysius lived in Athens in the first century. He received a brilliant Hellenic education, studied astronomy in Egypt, and was elected a member of the Areopagus, the city's supreme court. When Paul preached in Athens, Dionysius heard his word and was baptized. For three years he was a companion of Paul, and then became bishop of Athens.

According to legend, Dionysius was present at the burial of the Most Holy Mother of God. After the death of Paul, he went with a preaching to the west - to Rome, Germany, Spain, Gaul. He was captured and beheaded around 96.

The saint is credited with authorship of the corpus of theological works of the Areopagitika, which had a great influence on Christian philosophy.

The popular name "Winter" is associated with the arrival of the first serious cold: by this day the land was finally preparing for winter. The second name - "Autumn fever" - reflects the belief: from this day begins the time of colds and fevers. In order to protect themselves from diseases, people prayed to Saint Dionysius and tried not to leave the house unnecessarily.

It was believed that with Denis the Winter bears lie in the dens. The peasants tried not to go into the forest, so as not to disturb the beast.

On this day, autumn field work was completed and they began to prepare the house for winter: windows were insulated, cracks were heated, furnaces were checked.

The hostess baked cakes with cabbage and turnips, cooked porridge. The food was distributed to neighbors and those in need.
