Two camels from Kalmykia settled in Kazan zoobotsad

The Kazan Zoo received new pets - a pair of young two-humped camels of the Kalmyk breed. The animals were born in 2023, and their delivery was a gift to Tatarstan from the head of Kalmykia Batu Hasikov. The couple was settled in the Zambezi River, according to the capital city hall.

The journey from the steppe region to the capital of Tatarstan took a lot of time: transport with animals moved in transit through the Astrakhan, Volgograd and Rostov regions.

Kalmyk camels have unique natural data formed by the conditions of their historical homeland. They perfectly tolerate severe steppe winds and sharp temperature fluctuations. In winter, animals are protected by a dense undercoat, which with the onset of heat is replaced in the process of molting. This biological feature will allow newcomers to be freely kept outdoors throughout the seasons.

Zoologists have developed a special diet for them based on high-quality hay and other plant foods, and have created a comfortable habitat.

It is worth noting that this year was especially fruitful for replenishing the exposition of the Kazan Zoo. Two Asian elephants were brought here in the summer. This valuable gift was presented by the Lao leader to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In September, the zoo was replenished with eight giraffes from Namibia. To date, there are 143 species in the enclosures of the zoo.
